LAND & WATER MANAGEMENT PROJECTS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED

Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MENR) - Kenya Agricultural Productivity and Sustainable Land Management Project ( KAPSLMP) (2016)
Developing the Kenya Strategic Investment Framework (KSIF) for Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in Kenya. This is a Strategy document developed in line with the Vision 2030 of Kenya and meant to strengthen inter-sectoral coordination, integrated approaches, cost effective investments, prioritization and budgetary support for SLM and thereby contribute to the attainment of Kenya Vision 2030 targets of economic development, food security and sustainable livelihoods.

AgSRI PTY of India (2015-2016)
Implementing a project entitled “Promoting and implementing System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in Western Kenya”. This project was implemented in the Ahero, West Kano and South West Kano irrigation schemes of western Kenya, on behalf of the funding organization, of India. It involved the establishment of the study protocols for SRI method, development and printing of training materials, facilitating the training of staff and farmers on SRI principles and support in organizing meetings and logistics for SRI technology and development of a systematic database on identified parameters; and also creating awareness about improved cultivation practices and adoption of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) to reduce water use and improve productivity of paddy crop in western Kenya.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Kenya (2015-2016)
Conducted an assessment of ecosystem services in Kenya’s ASAL (arid and semi-arid lands) water towers (Marsabit and Samburu) and Developing a Project Document (ProDoc) in FAO format, for the Integrated and Participatory Management of ASAL Water Towers in Northern Kenya.

NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA) (2015 - 2016)
Assessment of the policy, legislative, and institutional framework for sustainable land management within the public sector in Kenya. It involved conducting a review of existing policy, legal and institutional frameworks governing the work of all government agencies involved in land management and degradation as detailed in the objectives; Produce a policy review report based on the findings from the review; Present study findings to key stakeholders at a national dissemination workshop to be hosted by the government of Kenya; and Finalize the report based on the inputs from the workshop.  For NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA).

Reviewing and Updating of the Tana Catchment Area (TCA) Catchment Management Strategy (CMS): Dec 2013-May 2014
Developing the methodology for Review of Catchment Management Strategies (CMS), for TCA, with assessment of the progress made in the implementation of past TCA CMS based on stakeholder consultations, field visits, interviews, progress reports and assessment of activities implemented at regional and sub-regional levels. Highlight the value of ecosystem services and protect and restore degraded ecosystems and ensure increased participation and public consultations in the development of the CMS. Review and update the Tana-Catchment Management Strategy for 2014-2022, for WRMA.

Priority Adaptation Actions relating to Water/Hydrology/Drought: Jan–April 2013
Identified and prioritizied the adaptation actions required to address climate related impacts on water resources including availability, quantity, quality, conservation, service delivery, research in water and access in Kenya (including drought related issues) for both domestic and productive uses. Provided facilitation for the Participatory Adaptation Planning Workshop for the Climate Change Strategic Interventions and Action Plan for Tanzania’s Agriculture Sector, for the World Bank.

Facilitating the Workshop on Climate Change adaptation in Tanzania –April 2013
Working closely with the MAFC (Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security) and World Bank teams in Tanzania, facilitated the Tanzania National Climate Change Strategy, climate change “risk matrix” approach, and climate change issues in Tanzania’s agriculture sector stakeholder workshop which involved diverse stakeholders including Government, NGOs, researchers, the private sector, and Development Partners, and planning how to execute a complex exercise based on climate science and also facilitating meaningful discussions and deliberations on adaptation priority actions and opportunities for mitigation co-benefits. Also compiled the Workshop Proceedings and peer reviewed the draft Action Plan.

Nile Basin Initiative (NELSAP-RATP) - 1st October 2010 to 31st July 2012

Nile Basin Initiative's NELSAP-RATP programme commissioned a project for the production of training / dissemination materials on best practices in water harvesting and small scale irrigation in Nile upstream countries (Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda). This has involved desk reviews and field visits in the seven countries to  gather data, then preparation of Ten Training Manuals which are all now complete. It has also included implementing a Regional Training of Trainersworkshop and a set of National Dissemination seminars in all the seven countries.

Developing a Background paper for the FAO Subregional Expert Workshop: Coping with Agriculture Water Scarcity in Eastern Africa: Policies and Best Practices, held between 24-25 November 2011in Nairobi, Kenya.

Aga Khan Foundation (AKF): 1st - 3rd November 2011

Developing training materials on the systems of Rice Intensification and facilitating a Training workshop in Arusha, Tanzania on knowledge transfer.

Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC): May - June 2011

Facilitated the harmonization of standards and procedures for monitoring water quality and quantity in Mara River Basin. A project of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) Secretariat of the East African Community (EAC).

International Water Management Institute (IWMI) February-March 2011
 Facilitate establishment of Project support, Improved Management of Agricultural Water in Eastern and Southern Africa (IMAWESA) phase2. This also includes establishing an up-to-date database of agricultural water management experts and institutions, partners and other actors that is searchable and identifies interests and capacities for collaboration. Also make recommendations on networking based on experiences gathered from IMAWESA-1.

World Bank/AgWA September 2010 –January 2011
 Establishment of AgWA Internal Governance and Partnership building for the East and Southern Africa Region. This entailed engaging with sub-regional organisations and the establishment of a dedicated sub-committee of the working group on Agricultural Water for Africa (AgWA) governance, to build partnerships that better connect AgWA’s components with ongoing and planned sub-regional activities, and engages key actors within the process of defining AgWA’s future governance. It also entailed  a review/stock-taking the status and content of AWM in signed CAADP Compacts and the national investment plans linked to CAADP through Compacts for the countries of the sub-region. The ways forward were developed, including activities within the AgWA workplan and identification of resources required for effective sub-regional delivery mechanisms, including membership, secretariat arrangements and involvement of sub-regional institutions in decision making.

Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) July 2010 –March 2011
 Undertaking the development of the AGRA Water  Management Strategy
It involved gathering information and ideas to develop a clear understanding of the critical issues facing agricultural water management in sub Saharan Africa. Among others (i) bringing in the  experience and lessons from past and current water management programs in Sub Saharan Africa (ii) gathering stakeholders’ views and ideas to ensure that the developed strategy is based on a wide range of views and ideas from people who have interest and experience in agricultural water management.
